1. Using the Wrong Bond for the Concrete

This error is the first mistake.

Diamond segments are designed with different bond hardness levels, and using the wrong one will destroy your tooling fast. Soft bond segments are designed to wear faster to expose fresh diamonds. On soft and abrasive concrete, this process happens too quickly, causing the segment to break down before the diamonds can be fully utilised.

The Rule:
Hard concrete → Soft bond
Soft concrete → Hard bond

Why it matters:
If you use a soft bond on soft concrete, the segment will wear out extremely quickly.

2. Starting Too Fine (Instead of Aggressive)

From my experience, it’s best to use PCD segments to scratch and open the surface, not remove everything. This helps break the coating and expose the concrete underneath.

Once the surface is opened up, switch to 16 or 30 grit metal-bond segments to remove the remaining material more efficiently and prepare the floor for the next stage.

Speed is a big deal!

Slow your machine down as much as possible — the PCD will cut better.

 

4. Running the machine too fast

Running your grinder too fast can reduce cutting efficiency and negatively affect performance. Higher speeds generate more heat, which can cause the segments to wear out faster and lose their cutting ability. Controlled, slower operation delivers better cutting performance and more consistent results.

 

5. Heat build up and no cooling

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of diamond tooling. As grinding segments heat up, their cutting performance begins to drop. Excess heat increases wear and can lead to glazing, where the diamonds stop cutting effectively. Keeping your segments cool helps maintain consistent performance and extends tool life.

To maintain performance and extend tool life, it’s important to manage heat and pressure. Take short breaks to allow the segments to cool, and use a spray bottle to reduce heat during grinding. Avoid overloading the machine — let the tool do the work rather than forcing it.

You might see the segments disappear faster than you thought, cut not as well as they should, have too much heat build-up, or wear in patterns that aren't even. These are strong signs that your setup or grinding method isn't working well.

To extend tool life and improve performance, focus on using the correct approach. Always match the bond to the concrete hardness, start with more aggressive grits and refine as you go, and use PCD segments when removing coatings. Controlling machine speed and pressure, along with keeping your tools cool, will also make a significant difference.
