Husqvarna S13 Filters: Cleaning, Replacement and Suction Troubleshooting
Share
Has your Husqvarna S13 dust extractor lost suction? Before replacing the motor or ordering new filters, it helps to understand where the restriction or air leak might be.
A blocked hose, a clogged primary filter, a damaged seal or an incorrectly fitted Longopac-style continuous dust bag can affect suction. New filters may help when filtration is the problem, but they will not fix a leaking hose or loose cover.
This guide explains the S13’s primary and HEPA filters, what to check when suction drops, and how to choose replacements.
Which filters does the Husqvarna S13 use?
The Husqvarna S13 uses two filtration stages: one primary filter and one HEPA filter.
| Filter | Purpose | Replacement reference |
|---|---|---|
| Primary filter, also called the pre-filter | Captures dust before it reaches the HEPA stage | Husqvarna 590397401, also written 590 39 74-01 |
| HEPA filter | Provides the final filtration stage | Husqvarna 590429801, also written 590 42 98-01 |
Always check the machine model, existing filter and mounting arrangement before ordering. Older manuals may show different part references, so a matching model name should not be your only fitment check.
What does the primary filter do?
The primary filter sits before the HEPA filter in the airflow path. It captures dust that has not already separated out inside the extractor.
As dust accumulates, the filter can restrict airflow. This is why regular use of the machine’s filter-cleaning system matters.
A damaged or poorly seated primary filter may also allow dust to bypass it and reach the HEPA stage.
What does the HEPA filter do?
The HEPA filter is the final filtration stage. Its condition and sealing surfaces matter: air needs to pass through the filter media, rather than around a damaged seal.
The primary and HEPA filters perform different jobs. One does not replace the other, and the machine must not be operated with a required filter missing.
Why is my Husqvarna S13 losing suction?
Reduced suction does not automatically mean the motor has failed. Start with the accessible checks below.
Switch off and unplug the extractor before opening it, removing components or inspecting inside the hose. Use appropriate dust-control procedures and protective equipment when handling contaminated parts.
1. Check the hose and connections.
Look for:
- Blockages inside the hose or tool connection.
- Kinks or crushed sections.
- Splits, holes or damaged cuffs.
- Loose connections at the extractor or grinding equipment.
A blockage restricts airflow. A hole or loose connection lets air enter before it reaches the tool.
2. Check the dust collection system.
Make sure the correct collection bag or system is fitted and secured properly.
Check whether the bag needs changing and whether collected dust is dropping into it correctly. The Husqvarna manual instructs operators to complete the filter-cleaning cycle before changing the collection bag.
3. Check the top cover and seals.
A loose top cover or defective gasket can reduce suction.
Inspect the seating surfaces for dust or debris that prevents a proper seal. Check the clamps and look for damaged or displaced gaskets.
Replacing a filter will not resolve an air leak elsewhere in the machine.
4. Clean the primary filter using the built-in system.
The S13 uses a reverse-air-pulse filter-cleaning system.
If suction has dropped during use, follow the cleaning procedure in the operator’s manual for your machine. If cleaning does not restore performance, further inspection or filter replacement may be needed.
5. Investigate persistent filter restriction.
The S-Line manual directs operators to replace the pre-filter if suction remains poor after the cleaning procedure, followed by the HEPA filter if the problem persists.
Before replacing parts, also consider the hose, collection system and seals. If the cause remains unclear, have the extractor inspected by a qualified service technician.
How to use the S13 filter-cleaning system
For the S-Line machines covered by the June 2017 operator’s manual, Husqvarna describes this procedure:
- With the extractor running, cover the inlet using the attached cover where applicable.
- Allow the vacuum to build for four to five seconds.
- Quickly press and release the filter-cleaning control.
- Repeat for five cycles, allowing the vacuum to rebuild between each cycle.
- Switch off the motor and wait until it has stopped completely.Uncover the inlet.
Follow the instructions supplied with your particular machine if its controls or procedure differ.
The manual recommends cleaning when suction is poor, before changing the collection bag and when work is finished.
The built-in reverse-air-pulse system is not the same as blowing a removed filter out with a compressor.
Can you wash an S13 primary filter?
Cleaning instructions depend on the filter fitted.
The June 2017 Husqvarna S-Line manual states that its pre-filter can tolerate water, but warns that high-pressure water, compressed air and forceful impact can destroy it.
That statement should not be treated as permission to wash every replacement filter. Follow the care instructions for the exact filter you have, including any drying requirements before refitting.
For routine cleaning, use the machine’s built-in system as instructed.
Can you clean the S13 HEPA filter?
The Husqvarna manual says the HEPA filter cannot be cleaned and that attempting to clean it may damage it.
Do not treat the HEPA cartridge like the primary filter. Avoid washing it, blowing it out with compressed air or striking it to remove dust.
When installing a replacement, handle it carefully and avoid touching or damaging the internal filter media.
For a Paddle H13 HEPA replacement filter, follow the instructions supplied with the Paddle filter. Do not apply the primary filter’s water-cleaning guidance to it.
When should you replace the filters?
Filter condition and machine performance are more useful than appearance alone.
Replacement may be needed when:
- The primary filter remains restricted after the permitted cleaning procedure.
- Filter media is torn, punctured or otherwise damaged.
- A filter’s sealing surfaces are damaged.Inspection identifies a filter fault.
The June 2017 manual recommends replacement intervals of six months for what it calls the “socks filter” and twelve months for HEPA filters. These are recommendations from that edition, not a guarantee of service life.
Dust loading, operating conditions and filter condition can make earlier replacement necessary. Follow the maintenance requirements for your machine and installed filters.
What if dust comes out of the motor exhaust?
Stop using the extractor and investigate.
The manual identifies an incorrectly assembled or damaged filter system as a possible cause. This is different from ordinary suction loss and should not be addressed simply by continuing to pulse-clean the filter.
Check the system using the appropriate service procedure or arrange inspection by a qualified technician.
Should you replace one filter or buy an S13 filter pack?
At Paddle Wholesale, we strongly recommend replacing the primary and HEPA filters together when the primary filter has reached the end of its service life—particularly if it is damaged or the condition of the HEPA filter is uncertain.
The two filters work as a system. The primary filter captures dust before it reaches the HEPA stage. If the primary filter becomes damaged or dust bypasses its seal, more dust can reach the HEPA filter, increasing its loading and restricting airflow.
Replacing only the primary filter may leave you with reduced suction if the existing HEPA filter is already restricted. Replacing only the HEPA filter while leaving a damaged or poorly sealed primary filter in place can expose the new HEPA to excessive dust.
The Husqvarna manual states that HEPA filters cannot be cleaned; attempting to clean them may damage the filter media.
Replacing both together gives you a fresh start across both filtration stages. It does not replace the need to check the hose, seals and collection system, but it avoids leaving an old, potentially restricted filter in the airflow path.
Replacing a single filter can still be appropriate if the other has been confirmed serviceable. However, our preferred approach when renewing worn filters is to replace the complete pair.

Choosing the correct S13 replacement filters
Before buying, check:
- Machine identification: confirm that the extractor is an S13.
- Part reference: compare the existing filter reference with the replacement listing.
- Physical fit: check dimensions, mounting points and sealing surfaces.
- Quantity: the S13 arrangement covered here uses one primary filter and one HEPA filter.
- Product instructions: confirm the replacement is suitable for your machine and intended use.
The Paddle pack combines a genuine Husqvarna primary filter with a clearly identified Paddle-branded H13 HEPA replacement filter.
Matching a part reference helps identify a replacement, but correct installation and an effective seal remain essential.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my S13 motor run but the vacuum does not suck?
The manual lists a disconnected hose, blocked hose or missing dust collection bag as possible causes. Inspect these before assuming the motor needs replacement.
Will a new filter restore suction?
It can help if a restricted filter is causing the problem. It will not fix a damaged hose, leaking gasket, loose cover or another mechanical fault.
How many HEPA filters does the S13 need?
The S13 configuration covered in the Husqvarna S-Line manual uses one HEPA filter. The S26 uses two and the S36 uses three, so filter-pack quantities are not interchangeable across the range.
What is the S13 primary-filter part number?
The primary-filter reference is 590397401, also written 590 39 74-01.
What is the Husqvarna HEPA replacement reference?
The S-Line HEPA reference discussed here is 590429801, also written 590 42 98-01. Confirm compatibility with your machine and existing filter before purchasing.
Can I use the S13 to collect water or slurry?
The S-Line manual used for this guide specifies dry use and says not to collect liquids. A statement that a particular pre-filter tolerates water does not make the extractor suitable for wet vacuuming.
Can I run the machine without the HEPA filter to improve airflow?
No. Do not operate the extractor with a required filter removed. Investigate the restriction or fault and restore the correct filtration system.
Which filters are included in Paddle’s S13 pack?
One genuine Husqvarna primary filter, part number 590397401, and one Paddle H13 HEPA replacement filter compatible with Husqvarna reference 590429801.
